The superpowers had weapons with which they could destroy each other; strangely enough, it never came to a real war.
The Americans did not want communism to spread and came up with this policy. They wanted to contain communism. One instrument was the Marshall Plan.
In 1962, it came very close to war. There was a conflict between the Soviet Union and America over missile sites.
So President Eisenhower believed that if Indochina fell into communist hands, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia would follow.
