Essay for FCE
• In part 1 of the writing exam you have to write an essay. This question is obligatory.
• There is a question or statement for you to discuss, and also two notes to help to guide your writing.
You must invent a third idea. This is not your opinion.
• Put a title.
• Organise your ideas into paragraphs.
• Your language must be semi formal, so avoid words that are too common or generic (E.g.: things, stuff, get, etc.) and
not too much use of contractions (E.g.: can’t, don’t, won’t, etc.).
• The word limit is 140-190 words, but try to write as near to 190 words as possible.
• Spend 40 minutes on the task:
• 5 minutes to plan
• 30 minutes to write
• 5 minutes to check your work

Your last paragraph needs to be a conclusion.

MORE PRACTICE......
WHY PRACTICE FOR THE ESSAY?
The essay (Part one) counts as the same number of points as the writing task in Part two but it is a mandatory task so we know that there is definitely going to be an essay in the writing exam. It is a sure way of getting good points if you have had lots of essay practice and looked at frequent topics that come up.

Paraphrase:
Your introduction should always put the topic in the context of today's world and paraphrase the question of the essay. It is probably not a good idea to include your opinion here as the reader then knows what you think and they may feel they don't need to continue reading!
