Checkpoint 2 - what to expect

Read a text and answer questions on - parts of speech, pre/suffixes, literary devices, point of view, character/plot/setting

Write a story (fiction) - audience/purpose, text/sentence structure/spelling/punctuation/vocabulary/direct speech

Similie

A simile is a descriptive phrase that people use to compare one thing with another. Using the word as or like.

Slept like a baby.

As strong as an ox.

As busy as a bee.

Imagery

When a writer attempts to describe something so that it appeals to our sense of smell, sight, taste, touch, or hearing.

Glittering white, the blanket of snow covered everything in sight.

I touched the cold blue metal of Iron mans suit, it was so cold it sent a chill through my body.

Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is a word that imitates the sound of the object or action it refers to. When you pronounce the word, it will mimic the sound of what it is describing.

Animal sounds - woof woof

Relating to water - splish, splash, drip

Relating to collisions - bang, smash, thud

Alliteration

Alliteration is when the beginning sound of words are repeated in close succession. For example: 

Peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

Come and clean your closet, Kevin.

The gentle giant jumped with joy

                                                               He is a powerhouse

                                                                  You are my sunshine

                                                                    She has a good heart

Story writing recap

Clear structure - beginning middle and end (clear plot)

Describe the character what do they look like? What sort of person are they?

Describe the setting - where/when does this story happen?

Use direct speech - write what characters say to each other and use "" correctly

Your story should be at least 1,5 A4 pages long

Direct speech and quoting

Quoting: If asked to quote you must use the exact text written.

"all she could do was stare up at the clock"

Direct speech: when characters talk in your story and you write exactly what they said using ""

Quotation mark rules

Rule 1: Use quotation marks to show what characters say.

e.g: "Help me!" exclaimed the little girl

Rule 2: Punctuation stays in the quotation marks.

He said, "this is the worst day of my life!" after hearing the holiday was cancelled.

Rule 3: Start a new line for each new person that speaks. 

Make clear who is speaking.
