Japan was, just like Nazi Germany, extremely nationalistic

Japan wanted to expand it's territory for political status and raw materials. 

In September 1940 Japan made a pact to work together with Italy and Germany, The Axis powers. They were allies.

After the Japanes occupation of Indochina (Vietnam) the USA decided to no longer provide the Japanese with raw materials. 

Japan decided to attack Indonesia for its raw materials: oil, tin and rubber.

Close to Indonesia were the Filipines. The USA is very protective of that piece of land. Japan decided to bomb the American navybase Pearl Harbor on Hawaii.
