Language in The Netherlands

The Netherlands has two official languages: Dutch and Frisian

Many people speak dialect.

Besides Dutch, people also speak:

• Second language by immigrants
• English

Religion in The Netherlands

In The Netherlands 50% of the population does not have a religion.

The other half:

• For the most part Christian
• Muslims

• A multicultural society consists of people from different countries with different customs, religions and backgrounds

Migration

We no longer say 'allochtoon'. We speak of people with a migration background.

10% of the Dutch people is not born in The Netherlands.

1. People from the former colonies of the Netherlands (Indonesia, Suriname, the Antilles). 
   
2. Migrant workers (Germany, Turkey, Morocco).
   
3. Refugees from war zones (former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Syria).
   

What is the main reason for immigrants to move to the Netherlands nowadays?

Homogenization

• Cultural differences between areas are decreasing: cultures are becoming more similar.
  
• Think about Americanization (cultural blending)

Heterogenization

• New cultural differences are emerging: cultures are becoming less and less alike.
  

Assimilation

Migrants become so integrated into the new society that they can lose their old culture.
