What is a literary theme?
"A literary theme is the main idea or underlying meaning a writer explores in a novel, short story, or other literary work. The theme of a story can be conveyed using characters, setting, dialogue, plot, or a combination of all of these elements." (masterclass, com) Many readers keep thinking about a theme long after they have finished the book: it's 'food for thought'.

Six common themes in literature are:
1.) Good vs. evil, 2.) Love, 3.) Redemption, 4.) Courage and perseverance. 5.) Coming of age, 6.) Revenge.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Mention 3 important themes in 'Madness'. You may choose 1 story to explain, or use the whole book.

Slide 9 - Open vraag

Tips to find a theme/important information:

1.) look for recurring (=repeated) words / dialogues / images
2.) question what you read: ask questions ('why is this?')

3.) look at what the writer does to express the theme (how exactly is madness expressed)
4.) keep a notebook of what you think is the most important information. You can also use a pencil to underline sentences or write notes in the margin.

Assignment instruction:
- People say ' a picture is worth a thousand words'..
-  Understanding Roald Dahl’s work isn’t always an easy task!
- Finding a painting, a photograph or another image that portrays (part of) a story can be of great help in getting a better understanding of the story as well as giving an insight into your personal interpretation.
SO THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO DO! :-)

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Assignment:
1. Choose your three favourite stories from Madness. Explain why these are your favourites using examples from the stories.
2. Use the internet to find a painting, a photograph, or another image for each of these stories that portrays it well. So 3 pictures in total!
3. The choice for an image is highly dependent on personal interpretation, so it's important to give your reasons for choosing a visual.
4. For each of the three images, explain in detail why you believe it fits the story so well.
