Case Study 1: Cyberbullying

Sarah is a cheerful and energetic HAVO 3 student who enjoys spending time on social media. She uses platforms like Instagram and Snapchat to stay in touch with friends and share her interests. However, lately, her usual joy has been overshadowed by constant fear and stress. A fellow student named Kevin began sending her messages on social media that became increasingly unpleasant. What started as harmless teasing quickly escalated to hurtful comments and threats. Kevin also spread rumors about Sarah, tarnishing her reputation among her peers. Sarah feels isolated and anxious. She has no idea how to handle the situation. She now avoids social media as much as possible, but the impact of online intimidation continues to haunt her. She finds it difficult to concentrate at school, and her performance is suffering. She feels as though her safe space has been violated and that she is nowhere safe from Kevin's bullying. Sarah has considered confiding in her parents or teachers, but she fears that this would only make the situation worse. She feels alone and helpless.

Discussion: What are the consequences of cyberbullying on the victim? How could you help Sarah? What measures can be taken to prevent cyberbullying?

Case Study 2: Physical Bullying
Tom is a quiet and friendly HAVO 3 student who enjoys pursuing his interests, such as music and sports. But in recent months, he has been carrying a dark secret. A group of older students has targeted him. They push him against walls, hit him, and threaten him with intimidation. Tom feels powerless and isolated. He avoids certain parts of the school for fear of further abuse. He struggles to sleep, and his appetite has diminished due to constant fear. His confidence has hit rock bottom, and he grapples with feelings of depression and anxiety. Tom doesn't want to tell his parents or teachers because he's afraid of retaliation from the bullies. He feels alone and misunderstood. He wonders why he has become a target and what he has done to deserve it. Tom feels trapped in a cycle of violence and fear, and he sees no way out.

Discussion: What steps could you take to help Tom? How can the school create a safe environment where physical bullying is not tolerated? What are potential long-term consequences for Tom and the bullies?

Case Study 3: Exclusion

Anna is a vibrant and friendly HAVO 3 student who is always ready to help others. But lately, she has been feeling increasingly lonely at school. During group activities and social events, she is systematically ignored and excluded by her classmates. She is left out of group chats and invitations to social gatherings. Anna tries to put on a brave face, but inside, she feels sad and lonely. She struggles to control her emotions and begins to doubt herself. The feeling of exclusion is taking its toll on her confidence and well-being. She wonders what she has done wrong and why she is not good enough to belong. Anna has tried to reach out to her classmates, but she feels rejected time and time again. She feels trapped in a lonely and hopeless situation.

Discussion: How can teachers and classmates support Anna? What are the psychological effects of exclusion on an individual? What strategies can be employed to promote an inclusive and supportive school environment?

Case Study 4: Verbal Bullying

Alex is a creative and intelligent HAVO 3 student who is always willing to help others. But lately, he has been feeling increasingly isolated at school. Classmates make mean comments about his appearance, his clothes, or his achievements. They laugh at him and ridicule him, leaving him feeling humiliated and powerless. Alex tries to put on a brave face, but inside, he is suffering. He avoids participating in class discussions and tries to blend in to avoid further ridicule. He feels trapped in a negative spiral of self-doubt and fear. Alex has considered telling his parents or teachers, but he fears that this would only make the situation worse. He feels alone and misunderstood. He wonders why he has become a target and if he will ever be able to escape the bullying. Alex feels trapped in a cycle of negativity, and he sees no way out.
