Why were Rome and Carthage at war with each other?
The Romans kept conquering land in Italy. By 265 BC, they controlled Southern Italy and became a threat to another  empire: Carthage (North Africa)

Both empires wanted to have power over the Mediteranian Sea for trading. 
Carthage had a great navy, Rome had a big army......

Why were Rome and Carthage at war with each other?
First war: Sicily (Rome won)

Second war: General Hannibal of Carthage won multiple battles
But Rome won again..

Third war: Rome won again... Destroyed the city and even put salt on their land. (why would they do that?)

- high crime rate
- corrupt leaders
- fighting between groups

Julius Caesar wanted to solve these problems. 
In 49 BC, he became ‘dictator for life’. 

Senators did not trust him and killed him!

His nephew Octavian took revenge! But learned form Caesars mistake... he became emperor in 27 BC called Augustus
