AS has more meanings than like:

as far as
the same .... as
after some verbs, such as ;) describe as and regard as
before some verbs:
as predicted/imagined/promised/expected etc.

Modals of the past
p. 230/231

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Modals of the past:

Should = zou eigenlijk moeten

should have

shouldn't have
needn't have
didn't need to
didn't have to

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Which one do you need?
should have+ past. part. or  shouldn't have + past. part?
This depends on the meaning ....

should have + past. part. (volt.dw.) = verwijst meestal naar spijt hebben dat iets in het verleden niet is gebeurd
shouldn't have + past. part. (volt.dw.) = verwijst meestal naar spijt hebben dat iets in het verleden is gebeurd

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Vergelijk hoe should have en should have not gebruikt worden:
I should have worked more. Now I cannot afford to join the trip to France.
I shouldn't have worked so much. I haven't seen much of my family and they'll leave tonight.

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

When speculating about something that might or might no have happened, you can use both:
should(n't) have + past part. (volt.dw.)

The bus should have arrived by now.
The game shouldn't have started yet.

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

when to use which? needn't have + past.part./didn't need to past. part.
needn't have: to talk about a past event in which something turned out to be unnecessary.  Iets had (achteraf) niet gehoeven, maar dat wist de spreker toen niet.

didn't need to: talk about a past event in which something was unnecessary. Iets was niet nodig en dat wist de spreker op dat moment ook.

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Compare:
I needn't have worried about my youngest sister. She turned out to be fine!

Sam knew he didn't need to watch his younger sister, because she was most independent.

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Which one do you need when?
didn't need to + inf. (hele ww) or didn't have to + inf. (hele ww)?

Never mind.... it doesn't matter.. they're the same ;)

Compare:
Sam knew he didn't need to watch his younger sister, because she was most independent.
Sam knew he didn't have to watch his younger sister, because she was most independent.
