Learning Objectives 
By the end of the session all learners will be able to:
  • Explore the Humanism pedagogical approach to teaching and learning.
  • Understand key terminology that underpins this pedagogical approach.
  • Explain Malaguzzi's 100 languages of a child and its link to the Reggio Emilia approach.

What is humanism?
  • Humanism is apart of education philosophy that forms concepts and views about how people learn and copy in society. 
  • Education philosophy - it is the goals, principles and aims of education that have evolved and changed over time. 
  • The intention of the humanist approach is to focus on feelings, attitudes and the holistic welfare of young children. 
  • Within this approach their is a belief humans have the thirst for knowledge and learning. 
  • For this reason it is the role of the adult to provide the right learning environment and coditions for children to learn. (Meeting their basic needs)

Understand the humanist theoretical perspectives (theory)
Holistic learning 
  • Holistic refers to childrens overall development, how they are developing as a whole. 
  • Supporting individual children and young people to construct knowledge. 
  • This can be affected by the context of their own feelings and experiences. This is considered as important as knowledge.
Child / student centered approach.
The teacher to provide learning experiences that are tailored to meet each individuals own needs. 

Learning should be personalised. 
Self actualisation 
A students personal and potential can be fulfilled only when their physical and affective needs have been met. 
This means a child or young person will meet their full potential if their needs are met and they are guided in the process. 
Agency 
As part of humanism, agency learning describes the ability to identify different valued goals and desired outcomes by the learner. 
Seeking meaning of your learning will help identify its importance to you.

Who is Loris Malaguzzi?
Loris Malaguzzi grew up in a town called Reggio Emilia (Italy), he completed a degree in pedagogy (teaching & learning) in 1946.

He worked in the schools in for middle aged children in Italy, he focused his practice on the experiences children encountered in education.

Malaguzzi was one of the inspirations behind the Reggio Emilia approach that first originated in Italy, however is now used world wide. 

Malaguzzi wrote a poem called the '100 language of a child'

Malaguzzi 100 languages of a child
Malaguzzi initiated the concept that a child may have many ways to express themselves, they posses a hundred languages. 
When referring to 100 languages it is more so they have '100 languages' but not all spoken, it actually considers self - reflection, thought processes, emotions and creativity. 

Different way children communicate without speaking, the utilise:
Their hands - Children express themselves through touch and problem solving. 
Thoughts - Children's cognitive processes, imagination ad problem solving abilities. 
Ways of thinking - Each child approaches learning and understanding in different ways. 
Play - Play is a language, a way of experimenting, creating and making sense of the world.
Speaking - Verbal language, art, movement and dance

The following was used to create and develop the foundations of the Reggio Emilia approach.

The Reggio Emilia approach
The Reggio Emilia approach develop in the mid 1950's, it orginated first in Italy. There is a town that Malaguzzi was from called Reggio Emilia. 
Since then it has evolved and developed in supporting education in more than 145 countries. 
Malaguzzi worked and networked with many to develop the learning practices in different toddler centers and preschools.

The poem 100 languages became the ethos for the Reggio Emilia approach.

What is the Reggio Emilia approach?
Use the internet to research the Reggio Emilia approach, takes notes in your book.

Understanding Malaguzzi & Reggio Emilia
The approach includes the following features of learning: 
  • Teacher and children are consider to be partners in learning, for example: children and practitioners should work together to gain the best from their learning. 
  • The prime focus is to ensure practitioners are promoting natural development by understanding the child's point of view. 
  • This is to encourage children to provide and demonstrate a sense of drive, curiosity and foster their full potential. 
  • The environment (room/ nursery) is also a teacher in this theory.

The Reggio Emilia 4 Principles 
The Reggio Emilia philosophy is based upon the following set of principles:

  • Children must have some say over what they learn; additionally, the senses play a big role in the learning process.
  • Children engage with their senses to help them learn and fully process something.
  • Children are encouraged to interact with other children and explore the world through material items and relationships.
  • Children should be encouraged to always express themselves and be given infinite means and opportunities to do so.
  • Children may have a 100 ways of thinking, playing, exploring and speaking (100 languages)
