1. Why did people specialise in other jobs?
The surpluses of food also meant that farming needed fewer workers. So people who were no longer needed to work in the countryside moved to towns and cities in search of other occupations.

Because more people moved to the cities, and people got richer, landlords could ask for more taxes. 

They used these taxes for organising events, defence etc. 

In exchange for taxes the inhabitants of the cities wanted city rights.                   Find out what city rights are.

The black plague
Between 1346 and 1353. Caused fever, lumps on skin and vomiting. In some cities half the population died.
No one knew how the plague was spread.

Many people blamed the jews for poisoning the water supply. 
             Why were jews often not affected by the disease?

Kings have secular power, the pope has spiritual power. 

Both parties wanted more power and started to disagree on this division.

Churches in the same region were joined in a diocese/bisdom.
The leader of a diocese had to be approved by the pope. 

This appointment is called investiture.

Remember the feudal system?

Land was supposed to be returned to the king after a vassal died. Instead the lands became hereditary. 

Kings lost power because of this. Instead they appointed bishops as vassals (celibacy), without permission from the pope
