What is Project Across Borders?

• This project will be discussed this whole term in both English and Communication classes. 
• You will look at CULTURAL DIFFERENCES and each of you will be assigned a different country.

What's your country?

When you hear your number, come forward and pick a country card. 

You have cards with numbers and cards with countries. 

Give each student a card with a number, if there are 23 students, hand out number 1-23. Put the cards with the countries faced down on a table at the front of the class. 

Put on the cheesy background music and use the bingo list and your bingo voice. Read out the numbers in random order and after each number, let the student with that number come forward and pick a country card. (The cards are face down so the students cannot see the country they choose.)

What cultural backgrounds do we have in class?

Sloppy handshake

Go round and give some students a sloppy handshake to see their reaction. 

What do you think/feel when someone gives you a sloppy handshake?

Translation: Taking the life vest will result in a 10 milion Rupiah fine / imprisonment.

Why is this sentence not translated into English?

Are the reactions to the examples mostly positive or negative? Why do you think that is?

How do foreigners see the Dutch?
What stereotypes do they use?

Write down the 15 Dutch habits that are discussed in the video

Explain to a foreigner what these things are.

A bitterbal is a crunchy fried ball with beef ragout in it. 

If you cannot translate the word, use the Dutch word and explain it. 

Weird Dutch habits

1. Work in pairs or groups of three. 
   
2. Do not look up information on your laptop or phone.  
3. Think of 7 habits and discuss what they are exactly and why they are typically Dutch.  

10 minute discussion in English

Talk to another group and discuss what habits you came up with and explain what they are about. 

1. What are typical Dutch celebrations and how are they celebrated?
2. What role do bicycles have in the daily lives of Dutch people?
3. Explain what "gezellig" or "gezelligheid" is. 
4. What is the Dutch kitchen about and which dishes (gerechten) and other food is popular?
5. How is Kings day celebrated? 
6. How would you explain to a foreigner that half of the Netherlands is below sea level?
7. Which sports are popular in the Netherlands and why?
8. What does the healthcare system (gezondheidszorg) look like and what is your opinion of it? 
9. How is a Dutch birthday typically celebrated? 
10. What are populair Dutch festivals and events?
11. Why do so many foreign (buitenlandse) tourists visit Amsterdam?
12. Why do you think foreigners should visit the Netherlands?
