What are poetic devices?

Poetic devices are essentially tools that a poet uses to create rhythm, enhance a poem's meaning.

Examples: Simile, Metaphor, Alliteration, Personificaiont and onomatopoeia

Expected Learning Outcomes

Learners will be able to:

• Identify the difference between a simile, metaphor, personificationa and onomatopoeia
• Use these poetic devices in a poem

What is personification?

Use personification to describe a common household appliance.
Example : The coffee machine spits brown water

The wind is whispering outside.

As the teacher entered the room, she muttered under her breath, "This class is like a three-ring circus."

Use onomatopoeia to describe the sound of a common household appliance.

Example: my alarm clock buzzes me awake in the mornings

A) Write a Haiku about spring - using personification

B) Write a Haiku about autumn - using onomatopoeia

Finally, devide an A4 page in equal parts.  Write your a haiku in each part and draw a picture matching each haiku
