Protest music in its  historical context

Lesson Goals 

At the end of this lesson you can:

• Describe the political atmosphere in the fifties and sixties
  
• Explain what is meant with " youth culture" 
  
• Explain consequences of different youth cultures
  
• Explain consequences of political changes in western cultures
  
• Explain the effects of pubic opinion on western politics

" Fight for your right" 

fifties: Youth raised in a protected environment, brought up in specific religious or political ' columns' (Verzuiling)  --> Respect en accept authority of your parents, church or neighbours.

sixties: change in mentality and attitude. Youth did not accept authority anymore. Rebel rebel!

Reasons for rebellion

- Growth in wealth: after WW2 more jobs, higher wages

- Leaving the house earlier

- Anti- conception

- questioning church dogmas

-influences of the USA 

(radio, tv, vinyl records!) 

Why would anti-conception lead to more independance?

New influences 

The origins of youth cultures
Causes: 

1. Birthwave of the early fifties (Babyboom  1945-55) 
2. Rise of prosperity
3. More and better education-> own opinion! 
4. TV, radio and vinyl: influence of USA to buy their luxury products (mopeds, music, cloathing) 

Different Sub-cultures

Influence of the Americans caused subcultures:

1. Nozems
   
2. Hippies & Provo’s
   
3. Punk 
   

- Ever subculture knew their own music, haircut, idols, fashion and protest against church, parents, government...Protestgeneration

Nozems 

Music: Rock ‘n Roll

Idol: Elvis Presley

Fashion:  Vetkuif, leather coat, jeans (Levi's) dr. Martens (low) 

Hobby:  Hanging around on the street, riding mopeds, listening vinyl, impress ladies...

Hippies and PROVO

Music: protest music, relaxed

Held/Idool:  The Beatles/ Rolling Stones/ Jefferson Airplane/ Fleetwood Mac

Fashion: long hair, bright colours, wide clothes 

Hobby: Hanging in parks, playing guitar, experimenting with drugs, confronting polices and civilians, loose sexual habits. 

Motto: Peace/ make love, not war

Punk 

Music: screaming guitars and singers

Idol: Johnny Rotten (Sex Pistols) Iggy Pop, 

Fashion: black torn clothes, buttons, hairpins, coloured hair in different shapes, army clothes, black make up. 

Hobby: squatting empty buildings, breaking stuff, bullying police.

Motto: No future! 

Everything is possible!

• Consequences:
• Less youth to church: decide for themselves how to live their life. 
• Ontzuiling:  

no more living in your own column:

2. protestanten
   
3. socialisten
   
4. liberalen
   

Morale changed...

* Tv gave the opportunity to ' look over the fence'  of your neighbour. Shift to own opinion, from church or political party. 

Feminism (2nd wave) 

Second feminist wave: 

-  equal rights for women, 

- chance to study, 

- to work ànd have a family, 

- not locked up in the house for household tasks,

- better childcare (daycare) 

change in politics 

People wanted to have their saying in politics: 

Consequence

1.  New political party D'66 (1966) 
   
2. Parties based on the Bible (confessionals) joined in a fusion because they lost voters (CDA= catholic and protest parties) 

troubles in prosperity: 

Oil crisis (1973)  prosperity growth stopped because of war in Middle East

Consequences: 

-Expensive oil, the foundation of economy. 

-Cut backs in businesses. Mass- unemployement

- Government less spending

Youth?

• Rise of the Youth!  “No hope No future” – “Fuck the state”. rebellion
  
• Not enough apartments for the youth: squatting. 

1980 crowning of Beatrix: krakers: “Geen woning, geen kroning”

Problemen en voorspoed

• 1985: economisch herstel
  
• Nieuwe verkiezingen zorgen ervoor dat CDA verliest!
  
• GEEN geloof meer in de politiek --> resultaat: Paars kabinet -->PVDA + VVD + D66 o.l.v. minister-president Wim Kok
  
• Nieuwe wetten tegen het zere been van de Christenen uit jaren 50: o.a. Homohuwelijk
  
• Tot 2001 economische bloei en groei. Veel werk, voldoende huizen, Volk regeert mee in de vorm van democratie, vrij leven
  

Problemen en voorspoed

• 9/11/2001: Aanslagen op TwinTowers New York --> De wereld in de ban van moslim terroristen.
  
• 2002: Moord Pim Fortuyn en Theo van Gogh.
  
• Verkiezingen 2003: CDA keert terug o.l.v Jan- Peter Balkenende.
  
• 2005: komst van PVV van Wilders door toename negatieve aandacht van de Islam. --> onvrede/angst
  
• Ook in Nederland groeit aanhang PVV. --> 

oorzaak: toenemend geweld van extremisten.
