What is Genre?

Genre refers to the category or type of literature such as fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and others.

Examples of Genres

Fiction includes novels and short stories, non-fiction includes biographies and essays, poetry explores emotions and ideas through rhythm and language, and drama involves plays and scripts.

Understanding Themes

Themes are the central ideas or messages that authors convey in their works, such as love, friendship, power, justice, and more.

Identifying Themes

Themes can be identified by looking at the recurring patterns or subjects in a literary work and considering what the author may be trying to convey.

Interactive Activity: Genre and Theme Match

Students will be given a list of genres and a list of themes to match, fostering understanding of how different themes can be explored across various genres.

Theme

The theme is the main idea, lesson or message in the novel.  It often represents universal and timeless ideas that are relevant in most people’s lives.

A theme can often be summed in a single word: love, death, loneliness, etc.
