  • Always take a notebook with you to class.
  • Write down the grammar rules in your notebook.
  • Write other important stuff in your notebook.

No notebook (or an empty one) means that you've forgotten your work.

Create a vocabulary list at the end of your notebook. This broadens your vocabulary and help you remember more.

Pronunciation

Consonant pairs /sh/ and /zh/
Your lips, tongue and jaw are in the same position when you make a /sh/-sound, like in ‘fish’, or a /zh/-sound, like in ‘television’;. The only difference is that you use your vocal cords for the /zh/-sound. That’s why the /zh/-sound is called voiced and the /sh/-sound is voiceless. Words with the /sh/-sound: short, vanish, finish, sugar, chef, ocean, tissue The /sh/-sound also occurs in other letter combinations, for example:
‘-sion’ dimension
‘-tion’ prediction
‘-cial’ special
The voiced /zh/-sound occurs less often than the /sh/-sound. The /zh/-sound is heard with the following letter combinations:
‘-sion’ (when a vowel or an ‘r’ comes before a suffix: decision, version)
‘-sure’ (leisure, but not when it is a double s, like in ‘pressure’)

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

29c: Pronunciation of words
  • Take turns and read the words in the box out loud.
  • Listen carefully to each other and make sure that your classmate pronounces the /sh/ and /zh/-sounds correctly. Choose the correct answer.

  • Think of three words with a /sh/-sound and three words with a /zh/-sound. Write them down.
