Traditions

Het verhaal gaat over 'The Lottery', een traditie die de dorpsbewoners blindelings volgen. Het is een bizar, dodelijk en gewelddadig ritueel, maar omdat het traditie is vinden de de dorpsbewoners het prima. 

De traditie in het verhaal is natuurlijk fictief. Kennen jullie een traditie in Nederland waarbij de mensen het prima vinden 'omdat het traditie is'?

Foreshadowing

Foreshadowing is a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story. 

Noem een aantal voorbeelden van 'foreshadowing' die je in de tekst hebt kunnen vinden.

Examples of foreshadowing in 'The Lottery'

- Children put stones in their pockets and make piles of stones in the town square

- The villagers' behavior when they gather in the town square (quiet/smiled rather than laughed)

- The black box and the villagers' reaction to it. They "kept their distance" from the black box

-> Oldest man in the village / says that village that have stopped the lottery, will return to a barbaric state
