Topic 1.3

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Homework check:
  • Open the docs on Classroom
  • Correct your hw in a different colour.
  • Bring up your textbook and notebook when your name is called.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Topic 1.3 - Learning Goals:
I can…

  • Explain the concept of density and know which measurements are necessary to calculate the density of a substance
  • Calculate the density of a substance, in g/mL or g/cm3, using the density formula.
  • Use density to determine the mass or volume of a substance by making a calculation
  • Use density to identify an unknown substance, since density is a property of a substance

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Topic 1.3 - Key Words:
  • Mass
  • Density
  • Volume

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

1.3 - Density:
Density = a measure how much matter is packed into a given area. It is a property of a substance.
The closer the molecules are, the greater the density.
Density tells us how many grams of matter there are per a unit of volume.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

1.3 - Density calculations:
Density = a measure how much matter is packed into a given area.
Common units:
grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3)
grams per milliliter (g/mL)
