Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Who am I?
Giyan Scheers
22 years old

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

More importantly though...
Who are you guys?

You get 30 seconds to think of one thing you'd like tell me about yourself!

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Today's planning
- Introduction and icebreaking shenanigans

Chemistry:
- The macro- and microlevel
- Experiment
-Short break??
- The periodic table

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Today you will learn:

- What is the macrolevel?
- What is the microlevel?
- What are molecules and atoms?
- What is the periodic table?

-Why do these things matter!?

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Macro vs. Micro level
What do you think of when you hear the words
MACRO and MICRO?

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Macro level
All things perceivable with your senses.

So....

All things you can see, smell, feel, hear, taste

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

So..... A little game.....

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Is this property in the macrolevel?

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Is this property in the macrolevel?

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Is this property in the macrolevel?

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

No.... because
You cannot see, smell, hear from just the substances that they have these properties

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Micro-level
Micro=small

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

We can see a plant is green...
But we cannot see what the leafs of a plant consist of that MAKE it green

macro properties are explained by micro-concepts

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Any questions on...
Macro-microlevel?

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

How do we explain things we cannot see??

The Universe must be built from smaller pieces that explain this!

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Ever heard of Molecules??

Slide 17 - Tekstslide

Ever heard of Molecules??

Universe is built up from tiny tiny tiny building blocks called
Molecules.

Slide 18 - Tekstslide

Water consists of Water molecules
ethanol/alcohol consists of ethanol molecules

Does mayonaise consist of mayonaise molecules?

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

A little perspective
How many molecules of water are in a glass of water?

Take a guess!!

Slide 20 - Tekstslide

A little perspective
How many molecules of water are in a glass of water?

6.7septillion!!

6.700.000.000.000.000.000.000 molecules!!!

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

There's more water molecules in a glass of water, then there are glasses of water in all of the oceans on earth!

Slide 22 - Tekstslide

Molecules are so small.....
Why do they matter?? We can't see them anyway....

We can explain a compound's properties by identifying the molecules they consist of.

Slide 24 - Tekstslide

Draw what you think molecules
of water in a glass look like!

Slide 25 - Open vraag

What could this mean?

Slide 26 - Tekstslide

Any questions on:

Macro-micro level
Molecules

Slide 27 - Tekstslide

Time for a short break?
You have 10 minutes to stretch your legs, leave the classroom if you like, grab something to eat/drink, ask questions

Shall we arrange something fun?
If all of you are back in time, I'll show something cool!
If someone is not.... I'll keep it for next week!

Slide 28 - Tekstslide

We carry on!

Slide 29 - Tekstslide

"We can explain a compound's properties by identifying the molecules they consist of."

The molecules tell us whether a compound is acidic or basic

Slide 30 - Tekstslide

Scientists have learned that
If you light gasoline(Benzine) on fire, CO2 and H2O molecules form

but if you burn alcohol, CO2 and H20 molecules are also the products

So apparently, gas and alcohol molecules consist of the same parts, but in different formation!

Slide 31 - Tekstslide

WAIT WAIT WAIT....
So the world consists of tiny building blocks called molecules,

but

What are molecules made of???

ATOMS

Slide 32 - Tekstslide

These smaller parts are called Atoms
All the different types of atoms are in a scheme called the Periodic table of Elements

Slide 33 - Tekstslide

Slide 34 - Tekstslide

Any questions on....
- The macro/micro level?
-Molecules?
-Atoms?
-The periodic table?

Slide 35 - Tekstslide

Final assignment
Choose one element in the periodic table and teach the class something about that element!

Example of what to do:
I choose Potassium(Kalium in dutch)!
It's symbol on the periodic table is K.
Our primary source of Potassium is found in bananas!

Slide 36 - Tekstslide

Have you learned:

- What is the macrolevel?
- What is the microlevel?
- What are molecules and atoms?
- What is the periodic table?

-Why do these things matter!?
