Help with the Present perfect and the present perfect continuous.

The present perfect continuous form is often confused with the present perfect. Indeed, there are many instances in which the present perfect continuous can be used as well as the present perfect. For example:

I've worked here for twenty years. OR I've been working here for twenty years.

I've played tennis for twelve years. OR I've been playing tennis for twelve years.

Present perfect

Subject + have +  past participle of the verb + objects

He has  worked all day.

We haven't studied English  for very long.

Questions:  are formed with "How long ..." for the length of an activity, and "What have you ..." for explanations of current results.

Present perfect continuous

Subject + have + been + verb(ing) + objects

He has been working for three hours.

We haven't been studying for long.

Questions:  are formed with "How long have you been ...." for the length of an activity, and "What have you been (doing) ..." for explanations of current results.

Difference between present perfect and present perfect continuous tenses

The present perfect continuous tense is used to talk about a continuous, but not necessarily finished action or situation.

The present perfect tense is used to talk about a finished action or situation.

I have been reading since morning. (Focus on continuity)

I have read two books since morning. (Focus on completion)

Work with a partner and discuss:

Do you have a very good relationship with your brother, sister, or other family member? Would you consider them a good friend? Tell your partner about the best or worst family relationships you have.

When you are choosing the word to fill the gap, make sure that you look at the words that come BOTH before and after the gap. REMEMBER: The word must fit grammatically and make sense!
