Questions and negations

Questions

Als er een vorm van to be (am/is/are/was/were) in de zin staat mag je die vóóraan zetten om de zin vragend te maken:

There were a lot of people at the party.

Were there a lot of people at the party?

Questions

Als er een hulpwerkwoord (modal verb) in de zin staat mag je die ook vóóraan zetten om de zin vragend te maken:

examples of modal verbs:

can, could, will, would, may, might, must, should

Let op: have is ook een hulpwerkwoord als er got bij staat!

Questions with modal verbs

Can you come over to my place this weekend?

Will she pass her exams this year?

May I borrow your pen, please?

Could you open a window, please?

Should we answer all these questions?

Have you got any homework for tomorrow?

Questions without modal verbs

Als er géén vorm van to be of modal verb in de zin staat moet je een vorm van to do als hulpwerkwoord gebruiken. 

Present simple: do/does + hele werkwoord (does bij he/she/it)

Past simple: did + hele werkwoord (infinitive)

Questions without modal verbs

Jenny teaches French at a school in California. 

Tense --> present simple

Jenny = she

Does Jenny teach French at a school in California?

Questions without modal verbs

My mum made a stuffed turkey for Thanksgiving. 

Tense --> past simple

Did your mum make a stuffed turkey for Thanksgiving?

Questions without modal verbs

Her parents always go shopping on Saturday.

Tense --> present simple

My parents = they

Do her parents always go shopping on Saturday?

Negations

Achter een vorm van to be en modal verbs mag je het woordje not zetten. Vaak gebruik je dan de afkorting:

He can't come to the match on Saturday. 

We won't (will not) help you with that. 

There aren't any tomatoes left. 

Negations

Als er géén vorm van to be of modal verb in de zin staat moet je een vorm van to do gebruiken om de negation te maken:

Present simple: don't/doesn't + hele werkwoord

Past simple: didn't + hele werkwoord

Negations

We had a dog when I was little. 

Tense --> past simple

we didn't have a dog when I was little. 

Negations

Nathan parks his car across the street.

Tense --> present simple

Nathan =  he

Nathan doesn't park his car across the street. 

Negations

They use plastic bottles for their soda.

Tense --> present tense

They don't use plastic bottles for their soda. 

I overslept yesterday.

1. I didn't overslept yesterday.
2. I didn't oversleep yesterday
3. I don't overslept yesterday.
4. I don't oversleep yesterday.

I am your teacher.

1. I amn't your teacher.
2. I am not your teacher.
3. I don't am your teacher.
4. I don't be your teacher.

Turn this sentence into a question:
I am your teacher.

Turn this sentence into a question:
I overslept yesterday.

Turn this sentence into a question:
You don't like school.

Turn this sentence into a question:
Pizza with pineapple is a disgrace.

Turn this sentence into a negative:
Pizza with pineapple is a disgrace.
