after this workshop:

you have talked for at least 2 minutes

using 4 different linking words

about how you create a story

try to connect sentences

in order to show sequence, give a reason, add information and show contrast

example - no connection

The alarm goes off. I get up. I get dressed. I have breakfast.

these sentences are not connected, although you can image they do have a connection

example - let's connect

When the alarm goes off, I get up and get dressed. Then I have breakfast.

now you see the connection because of the linking words

let's connect, some examples

- ad information -> AND, ALSO, BESIDES

- show contrast -> BUT, HOWEVER, ALTHOUGH

- reason -> BECAUSE, SINCE, THAT IS WHY

- consequence -> SO, AS A RESULT

- sequence -> FIRST, SECOND, THEN, FINALLY

make notes, we're going to use them! (more on p. 245-247)

practice

in pairs

A: tells a story, use as many linking words as possible

B: listen, write down linking words you hear and the ones you have missed

practice

what: use linking words in English sentences

how: tell a story about a subject (on the next slide); note the linking words used by your partner

help: ask me and give eachother feedback

time: 10 minutes

outcome: you have used linking words in spoken English

ready: think of what words you could have used as well

Switch roles

You have had (or want to have) a nice evening watching a movie at  home with a friend. Tell how you prepared and how it went.
