A community or society that is in some important way undesirable or frightening. It is the opposite of Utopia.

Why dystopian literature?
1. To educate and warn about the dangers of today's society/politics 
2. Helps us examine real fears 
3. Can help us think about all these scenarios withous actually having to live through them

-> Dystopian text takes something that already exists in our society and intensifies its effect or power.
