These words all express contrast. Although and however are more formal than but.
But
joins two clauses. It must to before the second clause and has a comma before it.
Although
joins two clauses. It can go at the start of a sentence in which case a comma separates the clauses. OR it can also go in the middle of a sentence, in which case it is preceded by a comma. I use Facebook to keep in touch with friends, although I don't like it.
