When the church of Eygelshoven was restored in 1939, the remains of two Roman milestones were found, bricked into the church tower wall. Milestones like this stood - every thousand paces - along the Roman roads. The posts are quite weathered, but an inscription can still be read: for example, the name of Emperor Constantine the Great is recognizable. He gave the Via Belgica a major overhaul around the year 310.
