Slide 10 - Quizvraag
Slide 11 - Tekstslide
Atomic mass
This is
protons + neutrons
Each of these sub-atomic particles has a mass of 1
electrons have a mass of virtually 0 so are not included in the mass
All the mass of an atom is therefore in the nucleus
The atomic number is just the number of protons
Slide 12 - Tekstslide
Chemical formulae
Each capital letter in a formula is a new element
Some element symbols have a capital and a lowercase letter in their symbol
If there is no subscript number after then there is one atom of that element in the chemical
The subscript number only tells you about the number of atoms of the element just before the number
Slide 13 - Tekstslide
Formula mass
This is the mass of every atom in the chemical added together
You get the relative atomic mass of each element from the periodic table
You then multiply each relative mass by the number of atoms there are of that element in the chemical
You then add all the numbers together
Slide 14 - Tekstslide
Worked example
Calcium carbonate
(1 x Ca) + (1 x C) + (O x 3)
= 40 + 12 + (16 x 3)
= 52 + 48
= 100
Slide 15 - Tekstslide
Worked example
Glucose
(6 x C) + (12 x H) + (O x 6)
= (6 x 12) + (12 x 1) + (16 x 6)
= 72 + 12 + 96
= 180
