Something that started in the past and continues in the present
When we are talking about our experiences up to the present


They've been married for nearly 50 years.

She has lived in Liverpool all her life.
He has written three books and he is working on another one.
I have watched a lot of movies already but I plan to keep watching more.

have/has + past participle
usually with words like: so far, up to now, yet, since, for, ever, recently, just, before, ever, never

Present perfect vs past simple
The biggest difference here is most often a very specific indication of a time that has passed.

I saw that movie last Friday. (indication of specific past time)

To summarize:
Present perfect: for things that happened in the past which continue in the present and for experiences up until now (have/has + past participle)
Past simple: for actions that finished in the past at a particular past time (verb + ed)
They've been married for nearly 50 years. (Still married)

They were married for a few years. (No longer married)
I have played that game before.

I played that game yesterday.
