You will know..
what a joule/callorie is.
wicht nutreints there are.
wich nutrients whe need to break down.

Energy
All of your body’s activities require energy.
Energy can be measured in joules or calories
On food lables you van often find the amount of energy in 100 gram of that food, measured in kilo joule or kilo calorie.
Example
- Glass of water = 0 kj
- Biscuit = 100 kl
- Chocolate bar = 1000 kj
Slide 4 - Tekstslide
How much Energy?
The higher your activity level, the more energy
you need.
How much energy you need depends on:
- your gender
- your heigt
- your activity

Slide 6 - Tekstslide
Why do we need food?
To supply us with fuel for energy.
To provide materials for growth and repair of tissues
To help fight disease and keep our bodies healthy.
Nutrients (voedingsstoffen) = substances in food that provide your body with energy and other materials.
Slide 7 - Tekstslide
The 6 nutrients have 4 different functions
Building blocks
Fuels (energy)
Reserves
Protective substances

Fuels
In every cell is respiration.
Energy, movement, warmth

Nutrients can be stored up in the body

Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the main source of energy in your body.
The three types of carbohydrates:
- Sugar
- Starch (zetmeel)
- Fibre (vezels)--> (complex carbohydrate) Is found in the cell walls of plant cells. You cannot break down fibre. It helps your digestive system working smoothly.
Slide 13 - Tekstslide
Carbohydrates
Simple carbohydrates
- Sugar
- It consists of small particles that van easily enter your bloodstream and reach your cells.
Complex corbohydrates
- Starch
- It is made up of long chains of many simple carbohydrates.
- These chains are too arge to enter your bloodstream. They have to be broken down into sugars first.
Slide 14 - Tekstslide
Proteins
The body needs proteins to grow and replace/repair cells.
Too much protein/too little carbs--> body will use protein as feul (energy).
Slide 15 - Tekstslide
Fats
A source of energy and storage units for energy.
three main types:
- saturated: solid at roomtemp. can cause heart problems.
- unsaturated: liquid, healthyer
- trans: special type of unsaturated--> chemically alterd to sty liquid. Bad for you

Vitamins and Minerals
Needed for growth and protection against disease.
Sometimes work together
minaral zinc helps body to obtain
vitamin C for example.
Slide 19 - Tekstslide
Scheurbuik
Scurvy :in navigators 'pirates' due to lack of vitamin C
Solution: Take fresh lemons/oranges with you on the trip.

Water
Water is an essential nutrient at every age.
Optimal hydration is a key component for good health.
Water accounts for about 60% of an adult's body weight.
We drink fluids when we feel thirst, the major signal alerting us when our body runs low on water.
