Reading

like listening:

- what will you be reading?

- what do you want to learn from it?

What kind of texts are you reading and what do you want to learn from them?

before you start reading

what kind of text will you be reading?

what do you already know about the subject?

what do you want to learn from it?

-> the answer tells you how to read

different ways to read

- is it something for you?

- do you want the big picture?

- are you lokking for an answer?

- do you want to know all the details?

predicting

- what is the text about, look at pictures and headings

- what kind of text is it?

- what is in it for me?

skimming

- to get the big picture

- what are the main items?

- how are they related?

- read the first and last paragraph

- read the first and last line of the other paragraphs

scanning

- look for an answer to your question

- scan the text for specific information

(date of birth: scan for months (August) or years (1971) in the text)

intensive reading

- you want to know the details, the arguments, the connections

critical reading

- what are the facts or the opinions?

- are they valid?

- do you agree or what is your opinion?

context

- you won't understand every word in a text

- can you understand the word from it's context

- you don't have to understand every word to understand the text

(using a dictionary takes a lot of time)
