Why did Germany wind up in a major economic crisis after World War One?

Germany becomes a republic:

After Kaiser Wilhelm II stepped down, the new German government, drew up a new constitution with no emperor and a significantly more powerful parliament. They called it the Weimar Republic. 

The name Weimar came from the name of the city where the constitution was signed.
