Grammar terms to know

subject = het onderwerp:  THE CAT always scratches me.

verb = werkwoord: The cat always SCRATCHES me.

auxiliary verb = hulpwerkwoord: My dog HAS bitten me.

adverb = bijwoord: My dog USUALLY does not bite me.

imperative = gebiedende wijs. Never leave your bag unattended.

Position in the sentence

Which sentence is correct?

1. They are usually a little nervous at first.
2. They usually are a little nervous at first.

Which sentence is correct?

1. She comes generally by car.
2. She generally comes by car.

Which sentence is correct?

1. They have often been told that.
2. They have been often told that.

Questions and negative sentences

In these situations, you use the present simple.

Which sentence is correct?

1. Does she come generally by car?
2. Does she generally come by car?

Which sentence is correct?

1. I don't go usually to the gym.
2. I don't usually go to the gym.

Present time

The following sections cover the present simple and the present continuous and how to choose the correct verb tense in the present time.

Examples:

Present simple: I go to the gym every week.

Present continuous: He is working on a project this week.

In these situations, use the present simple.

I work

He works

I don't work

He doesn't work.

Do I work?

Does he work?

In these situations, use the present continuous.

I am working.

I am not working.

Am I working?

You can use the present continuous for stative verbs, such as 

be, have, take, think, depend, appear, 

but this usually changes the meaning.

Complete this sentence:
I usually...to the gym on Sundays. (go)

Complete this sentence:
These days people .... about housing prices. (complain)

Write a sentence about your work about two things you are doing temporarily.

be used to/ get used to

The next section covers how to say:

'Ik ben eraan gewend.' en 'Ik raak eraan gewend.'

I am used to dealing with customers. ( Hier ben je aan gewend)

I am getting used to dealing with complaints. ( Hier begin je aan te wennen) 

Example sentences:

Become accustomed to = ergens aan gewend raken.

Do you see the form of the verb? SLEEPING/ LIVING

Which sentence is correct?

1. I am getting used to pay a fortune for shoes.
2. I am getting used to paying a fortune for shoes.

Which sentence is correct?

1. I am used to going out at the weekend.
2. I am used to go out at the weekend.

Write a sentence about work of sth you are getting used to doing.

Past habits

The next section explains how to talk about habits and actions in the past.

The word [ bare infinitive] is used.

This only means: het hele werkwoord zonder to ervoor.

He used to......sing in a band.

[Used to]  goes together, [sing] is the bare infinitive.

Do you see how the verb changes?

I used to .......

I did not USE to .........

Past habits and actions

Do you understand this?

I would sing = I used to sing

but only for actions and habits.

Which sentence is correct?

1. What did you used to do in summer with your friends?
2. What did you use to do in summer with your friends?

Are these sentences the same in meaning?
When I was young, I would play Super Mario.
When I was young, I used to play Super Mario.

1. yes
2. no

So, basically, there are three possibilities here:

When I was a child,

• I used to walk
• I walked
