Coupons and Rebates

Many manufacturers, stores, and service establishments offer customers discounts through coupons and rebates, or refunds. Each special discount is an incentive for customers to purchase a particular item because they will save money (paper coupon)

or get money back (rebate).

Markdown

Stores often promote products at sale prices, which are lower than their regular selling prices. The markdown, or discount, is the amount of money that you save by purchasing a product at the sale price.

Martha’s Clothing is having its semiannual clearance sale and is marking down all sale clothing an additional 60%. Their line of designer jeans had previously been marked down 30%. The pair that Betty Clark wants to purchase had originally been priced at $119.50. What final sale price will Betty pay if she purchases that pair?

Answer

Let r = Regular selling price. 

0.75 × r = $149.96;

r = $199.95
