Als je wilt zeggen dat iets niet zo is, maak

je een ontkenning. In het Engels gebruik

je hiervoor het woord not.
Als er in een zin een vorm van be (am, are, is, was, were)

staat, dan maak je een ontkenning door

daar not of n’t achter te zetten.

Examples:

I am not an expert on this.

Hugh isn’t my cousin, he’s my brother.                           is not

They aren't very funny.                                                           are not

It wasn’t a very good book.                                                  was not

We weren’t at the swimming pool.                                   were not
