Formulating your essay question:

Although there are different kind of essay questions, Cambridge favours the good, old question :).

An example: Should religions be involved in governing? 

An effective essay question

An effective essay question focuses on an issue and identifies a debate.

Example: Should performance enhancing drugs be allowed in competitive sport?

Issue: The use of performance enhancing drugs by athletes

Debate: Yes, they should be used (e.g. economic perspective because of...)

                  No  (e.g. ethical perspective, it's not fair because....)

Be careful of pitfalls

1. Make sure your essay question is really ONE question

2. Make sure your scope is not too narrow (e.g. by adding a country and a
     region)

3. Make sure your question is not too broad (e.g. you have a limited amount
    of words)

Check its global and local relevance.

Can you think of solutions from different perspectives?

• from an economic perspective, e.g., wealth creation through trade,
• from an ethical perspective, e.g., restoring fairness by measuring it against a moral standard
• from a political perspective, e.g., a minimum wage and taxation

Understanding perspectives in global context

Empathy = capacity to recognise and give space to opinions with which we do not agree

   

         Explain that your problem           is a problem by looking for

research/ evidence.

   Think of local and global examples.

Watch the movie 'The Court'. You will receive a link to the video and make a mindmap, write definitions in the glossary and state your opinions.

Elaborate on where your question comes from (give your sources)

What different perspectives there are on your question.

Final test criteria 1

- Writing an essay  (50%)

- Critical analytical writing (see checklist)

- Discuss; make sure you give arguments that cover both sides of the question. Your own point of view needs to be a substantial part of the essay

Final test criteria 2

- Your essay needs to contain a minimum of two and a maximum of four quotations from your resources. Explicitly refer to these resources.

- Explicitly refer to two or more key terms that have been used in the documentary 'The Court'. Make these terms in your essay
