Slide 17 - Tekstslide
Word order
The order of words in sentences in English is different from Dutch.
This is what you need to remember:
Wie->doet->wat/wie->waar->waneer
Slide 18 - Tekstslide
Tijdsbepalingen
Deze gaan aan het begin of einde van de zin.
Yesterday
, I saw a good movie.
I saw a good movie
yesterday
.
Slide 19 - Tekstslide
Uitzonderingen
Words that mention frequency go after the subject:
I
always
drink tea at breakfast.
We
usually
catch the 9:00 bus.
They
never
spend money on drinks.
Do you
ever
make dinner at home?
Slide 20 - Tekstslide
Plaatsbepalingen
In an English sentence the place always comes before the time.
We went to the nicest restaurant last week.
She played hockey at the sport center on the weekend.
Slide 21 - Tekstslide
Warm up
Look at the words in red. What are they doing in the sentence?
I watched a
great
movie.
They are petting a
brown
dog.
That cake was
delicious
!
Slide 22 - Tekstslide
Answer:
Adjectives (bijvoeglijk naamwoorden) give information about nouns (zelfstandig naamwoorden)
I watched a
great movie
.
They are petting a
brown dog
.
That
cake
was
delicious
!
Slide 23 - Tekstslide
Adverbs
What are the words in red doing in the following sentences?
She writes
beautifully
.
We are walking
quickly
.
Slide 24 - Tekstslide
Answer
Adverbs (bijwoorden) give information about verbs, (werkwoorden) and how the action in a sentence happens.
(These usually end with -ly)
I
greatly
appreciate your help.
Why are you walking so
slowly
?
Slide 25 - Tekstslide
Adverbs +
Adverbs can also give more information about adjectives.
The
incredibly
small mouse.
The
very
ugly armchair.
Slide 26 - Tekstslide
Adverb spelling
Adverbs usually end in -ly.
When a word ends in -y -> -ily easy -> easily
When a word ends in -le -> -ly terrible -> terribly
When a word ends in -c -> -ally basic -> basically
Slide 27 - Tekstslide
Adverb spelling 2
Some adverbs do not follow the spelling rules and do not get a new ending:
hard, fast, high, near, short, late
Sometimes you hear the -ly version of these words, but those words have another function (don't worry about this for now)
Slide 28 - Tekstslide
good vs well
good is an adjective -> a
good
book
well is an adverb -> You did
well
on the test
Slide 29 - Tekstslide
Exceptions
Na zintuigelijke werkwoorden komt een adjective, niet een adverb
Zintuigelijke werkwoorden: to be, to become, to feel, to look, to seem, to smell, to stay, to sound, to taste
That sounds great!
She is cool.
