Questions to ask yourself

1. Does it take place before another event in the past?
    Yes -> Past Perfect
    No -> choose on the the Present tenses

2. Is it a one-time event or a situation that has been completed?
    Yes -> Present Perfect
3. Is the situation still going on, has it been going on for a longer period of time?

    Yes -> Present Perfect Continuous, UNLESS it is a state verb! 
4. Is it a state verb?

    Yes -> Present Perfect + 'for' or 'since' 

I'm tired, I ___ (not sleep) well these past few weeks. 

1. Vindt het plaats voor een andere gebeurtenis in het verleden? 

2. Is het een eenmalige gebeurtenis of situatie die is afgerond? 

3. Loopt de situatie nog door, is die langere tijd aan de gang geweest?

Simple: focus on result

Continuous: focus on activity and/or length of time

1. have you done (pres. perf.)
2. have you been doing (pres. perf. cont.)
3. had you done (past perf.)

1. has had (pres. perf.)
2. has been having (pres. perf. cont.)
3. had had (past perf.)

___ for months so I think the musical is going to go swimmingly!

1. We've been practising
2. We practised
3. We had practised

1. has bought
2. has been buying
3. had bought

I ___ (believe) things would turn out okay and I was right.

1. have always been believing
