These modal verbs are used to express the ability or possibility that someone has to do something.

Can you open this jar? / I can meet you after school.

I could speak Chinese when I was a kid. -> past ability

I may be able to help you with that. / I may not go to school tomorrow because I'm feeling sick right now.
