Making negations
When making negations in English you have three options:
  1. there is one verb in the sentence and this is not a form of 'to be'
  2. there is one verb in the sentence and this is a form of 'to be'
  3. there is more than one verb in the sentence

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Making negations
1. there is one verb in the sentence and this is not a form of 'to be'
  • sentences in simple present
  • I walk to school.                - I don't walk to school.
  • She walks to school.         - She doesn't walk to school.
  • sentences in simple past
  • You walked to school.     - You didn't walk to school.
  • He walked to school.       - He didn't walk to school.
don't/doesn't
Since there is only one verb in the sentence, and you need two, you need to add 'don't' or 'doesn't' before your verb to make it into a negation.
'don't' is used with all subjects except third person singular
'doesn't' is used with third person singular (he/she/it)

after 'don't/doesn't' comes the complete verb
didn't
Since there is only one verb in the sentence, and you need two, you need to add 'didn't' in front of your verb to turn it into a negation.

after 'didn't' comes the complete verb

Making negations
2. there is one verb in the sentence and this is a form of 'to be'
  • make a negation by using 'am not', 'is not' and 'are not' in the present tense and 'was not' and 'were not' in the past tense.
  • I am a teacher.      - I am not a teacher.
  • She was late.         - She was not late.
  • You were nice.      - You were not nice.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Making negations
3, there is more than one verb in the sentence
  • make a negation by adding 'not' to the first verb. The rest of the sentence stays the same.
  • You have been complainig all day.     - You haven't been complaining...
  • They are talking to each other.            - They aren't talking ...
