So not only does the 'past perfect' belong in the past; it is also about something happening in the past, before another event/action. You can often recognise this because of certain words like: before, already and after.

Think of two example sentences yourself:

Why do we use the Past Perfect?

1. To show something that happens in the present, and another event/action happened in the past.
2. To show something that will happen in the future, and another event/action happened in the past.
3. To show something has happened in the past before another event/action in the past.

But how would we form a rule?

Example: Julia had walked her dog before she went to school yesterday.
