Adjectives and Adverbs

An adjective says something about a noun.

Sophie  is a         beautiful           name.

                                     adjective            noun

An adverb says something about a verb.

He         talked         nervously.

            verb              adverb

adverb = adjective + ly

adjective:    the beautiful girl

adverb:         she sings beautifully

                      adjective -le             =             adverb -ly

                        terrible                                       terribly

    adjective:  medeklinker +y (easy)

    adverb:       ily (easily)

Be careful!!

    adjective:  ends with -ic (fantastic)

    adverb:       +ally (fantastically)

Be careful!!

With some verbs  you don't use an adverb but an adjective. 

to be (zijn), to seem , to feel , to smell , 

to sound , to taste, to look, to appear

Het ruikt vreselijk. - It smells terrible.

Be careful!!

Some adjectives have a different adverb:

He is a good boy. - He studies well.

Sometimes it stays the same:

Bij fast, long, fair, low, high

That is a fast car. - It drives fast.
