Past simple

Past simple: iets dat in de verleden tijd is gebeurd en is geëindigd. Example: I saw a great film last night.

Past Continuous

Past continuous: iets dat in het verleden een tijd heeft geduurd.

Example: My sister and I were crying because the hero died.

Past simple vs. past continuous

Past continuous: iets is in het verleden bezig

Past simple: toen iets anders gebeurde

Hetgeen dat dus als eerste gebeurt (en een tijdje duurt) krijgt de past continuous

Example: She was writing a letter when the phone rang.
