When do you use the past simple?


When something happened in the past and it's finished:

I was at home yesterday.
They were in Egypt in 2015.

Questions with      was/were
If you want to make a question with was or were, you put was/were in front of the sentence and a questionmark (?) at the end:

He was very funny.
Was he very funny?

They were in Spain last year.
Were they in Spain last year?

negations with     was/were
If you want to make a negation with was or were you write NOT behind the verb. In short: N'T

He was a funny boy.                                   They were very happy.
He was not a funny boy.                           They were not very happy.
He wasn't a funny boy.                               They weren't very happy.

Mind spelling!
Some verbs have an -e at the end, it will only be followed by -d.
- They live in Amsterdam -> They lived in Amsterdam.

Some verbs end with -y:
- klinker+y = ed:          play -> played
- medeklinker+y:        try -> tried

Past Simple: regular verbs
If it's a regular verb you put -ed behind the infinitive.

Yesterday, I walked in the park.

They lived in New York.

Did they live in New York?

1. Put did in front of the sentence
2. Put the verb in the present tense
3. add a questionmark

Past Simple: irregular verbs
Irregular verbs change in a different way, you don't put  -ed behind the verb.

to buy    - she bought a present for him
to go      - she went to Walibi this summer
to write - he wrote a letter yesterday
