§3.5 MOVING THE SKELETON

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

§3.5 MOVING THE SKELETON
  • I can explain how the skeleton can move: joints and muscles
  • I can describe the 5 different joints, and give an example
  • I can draw a joint and describe the parts of a joint
  • I know what tendons and ligaments are
  • I can describe what a muscle can do: only pull or contract
  • I can explain why you need muscles as an antagonistic pair

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

§3.5 MOVING THE SKELETON
  • joints
  • ball & socket joint
  • hinge joint
  • pivot joint
  • Gliding joint
  • fixed joint
  • ligaments
  • synovial joint
  • synovial fluid
  • arthritis
  • tendons
  • antagonistic pairs

JOINTS
A joint is a place where two bones meet. This is also the place where your skeleton can move.

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

TYPES OF JOINTS
Fixed - no movement, skull
Ball and socket - movement in all directions, hip/shoulder
Hinge - movement in 1 direction, elbow/knee
Pivot - turning movement, radius+ulna/neck
Gliding - glide over each other, wrist/backbone

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

PART OF A JOINT
Ligaments: connect bone to bone
Tendon: connect bone to muscle
Synovial joint: ball and socket, hinge, pivot. Also have synovial fluid to oil the joint

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

MUSCLES
Muscles work in antagonistic pairs, because muscles can only pull or relax. They need a partner (antagonist) to pull the opposite way

Homework:
  • Complete all exercises of §3.5
  • Study glossary list §3.5 on StudyGo

  • Read: Skills Assessment 2B - Muscle experiment               Lesson 1: Development
