Natural and social population growth
The population can change in two ways:
  •  by births and deaths: natural population growth.
  •  by migration: social population growth.

People who die or leave a country have to be deducted from the growth.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Migration
People move > migration.

When people move to another country, it is called international migration.

Arne, Juliet and their children have moved from Uganda to the Netherlands.
For Uganda they are emigrants.
For the Netherlands they are immigrants.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

  • Labour migrant: Economic reasons > people looking for work.
  • Refugees: Political reasons. Due to war or because people are not allowed to have their own opinions.

Culture
What is culture?
Culture is the way a group of people live together. Culture is taught.

The most important cultural characteristics are:
  • language and religion
  • laws, family ties and upbringing
  • clothing, food, buildings and art

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

The European culture has spread over large parts of the world. In which way was this European culture spread?

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Cultural diffusion
Cultural diffusion took place due to countries conquering other lands > colonisation.

Besides colonisation there are other ways of cultural diffusion. Which?
  • trade
  • war

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Why is this ‘colour festival’ an example of cultural diffusion?
This festival comes from India and the youth of Europe and North America now celebrate this in their own land.

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Cultural blending
Cultural elements mix in three ways. Via:
  1. mass media
  2. migration
  3. tourism

The strongest culture that has been mixed into others comes from the USA > Americanisation.
