What does PEAL stand for?

What is the 'point' in a body paragraph?

Point

- topic sentence;

- one topic per paragraph;

- first sentence;

- don't use 'because';

- What is this body paragraph about? --> answer = point.

What can you use as evidence?

Evidence

In literature:

- quotes;

- paraphrases.

Always mention where you can find the evidence in the source text.

Analysis

- Why is it important (for the reader)?;

- Why is it important for the author (authorial choices)?

Analysis and explanation are not the same:

Explaining can look a lot like retelling the story. To make your essay more analytical, you need to be critical of why events happen, devices are used and what effect they have.

What is the Link?

Link

- last sentence (or two);

- mini-conclusion;

- link the subject to the evidence.

Makes for a well-rounded and structured essay.
