4.5 Germany's Warpath

At the end of this lesson...

• You will be able to explain the ideas of Lebensraum and Heim ins Reich.
•  You will be able to give three examples of Hitler breaking the Treaty of Versailles. 

What do you remember from the last lesson?

Foreign policy

• The Nazi's idea about race is the basis for their foreign policy.
•  One of these ideas was Heim ins Reich: wanting all Germans to belong to one big Germany. 
• Another one was Lebensraum: Germans needed more space to live.

What does Heim ins Reich mean?

1. Germans needed more space to live
2. Wanting all Germans to belong to one big Germany
3. Austria becomes part of Germany

Getting rid of the Treaty

• Hitler wants to get rid of the Treaty of Versailles. But he doesn't know how foreign countries will react...
• But in what ways does he break the Treaty?

1. Military draft (1935)

• Hitler brings back the military conscription. The army grows and the new weapons factories make the military stronger than ever before.
• Foreign reaction? France, England en Russia object, but they don't intervene...

2. Remilitarisation (1936)

• The Treaty of Versailles and the Treaty of Locarno forbid Hitler from sending soldiers to the Rhineland. He does it anyway however...
  
• France and England object again, but do nothing.

3. Anschluss (1938)

• Many people in Austria (those who spoke German) felt connected to Germany. They had been allies in WW1 after all.
• The Nazi Party in Austria even tries to convince people to join Germany.
• With little resistance ''the Anschluss'' was a fact.
