Present Perfect

Goal: to know what to use and look out for when writing the Present Perfect

Input:

- What is the present perfect about?

- Do we know something similar? (in Dutch maybe?)

- What words do we need?

- Write down 2 example sentences you can come up with now

Understanding what we learned

Consider the following sentences:

''Has Susan been coming back?''

''I has not saw our Julia this morning''

Is the present perfect used correctly? Write down why/why not.

Write down what is missing!

What about these sentences? 

''She has know him since 5 years''

''My English teacher has came back from Wales''

Present Perfect

What we were missing was basically the following:

- wrong tense (as in 'been coming' > present continuous)

- wrong pronoun + has/have ('I has' is incorrect)

- wrong conjugation (*vervoeging. 'she has know'|'has came')

Present Perfect

Which brings us back to what we need:

- I/you/we/they + have + past participle (*voltooid deelwoord)

- He/she/it + has + past participle

- past participle = altijd 3e rijtje (to know, knew, have known)

Let's try it out

Applying what we learned (safe):

(you know the person/thing + the verb)

1. Sander / get / lots of gifts

2. Mary and Steve / see / the greatest film

What about these sentences?

1. The dean / speak / to Eveline

2. Mike / not/ play / the Last of Us

3. I / never / fly / Argentina

*never/always/sometimes comes before the verb!

It also works with ridiculously long sentences, such as:

(has or have?)

1. The man with the outrageously hideous moustache who throws the cheapest parties and always forgets to buy beer 

... also forgotten to buy wine.

Has or have?:

2. My nan, who always bakes the most incredibly delicious cookies but always forgets to take them out of the oven in time eventhough she knows her cooking timer is broken, ... made it abundently clear that we are not allowed to buy here a new one.
