OW Unit 3: Beyond the classroom

This unit's objective

This unit is about education. You'll learn new and relevant vocabulary and practise listening (Part 1) and speaking (Parts 3 and 4). Furthermore, you'll practise with Reading and Use of English Part 5. The grammar of unit 3 is about conditionals and giving advice.

Boarding schools

A very British phenomenon. Think of The O'Sullivan Twins (de dolle tweeling) or Harry Potter. Boarding school stories make up an entire literary genre.

• What do you think are the perks of attending a boarding school?
• What about the other side of the coin? What are the drawbacks of life at a boarding school?

Here's an insightful video of Nikolas Lloyd, a British youtuber who went to a boarding school for two years at the age of 16.

Video

You're going to watch a video on the pros and cons of school uniforms. Take notes! Afterwards you need to debate with a classmate. You will need to be able to come up with arguments for or against wearing uniforms.

Explanation

You'll be divided in groups of three. Two will debate about whether or not CCC-students should start wearing uniforms. Take 5 minutes to prepare.

One of you will be the referee who will count the number of good arguments made and announce the winner.
