- CITO Listening practice (Woots)

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

The passive                    SB p. 32
The passive consists of a form of to be + past participle (volt. dw.)

The tense of the verb be determines the tense of the passive:
Derogatory language is often used to describe homeless people. (present s.)
Many problems have been caused by growing inequality. (present perfect)

If we want to say who or what caused the action, we use by.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

The passive                    SB p. 32
We can use the passive in order to change the focus of a sentence:
  • the action/ event/ process/ issue is more important than the agent; He was bitten by the dog.
  • the agent is unknown or obvious; My bike has been stolen.
  • new or more interesting information is presented at the end of a sentence, usually after by; Some historians say that metal money was invented by the Phoenicians in around 1500 BC.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

The passive                    SB p. 32
We can also use the passive for style reasons:
  • presenting information in an impersonal way; Temporary homes are being built in areas that are at high risk of flooding.
  • setting out rules and procedures, but no personal command; Ensure that the electricity supply is disconnected before demolition.
  • avoiding long phrases at the beginning of a sentence; New homes were promised by the highly popular mayor of the city.
