LESSON 6
CHAPTER 10
Setting up the research project
Slide 1 - Tekstslide
Entry ticket
Go to KWIZL and do the entry ticket assignment
ET_CH10_LSN6_Adaptive immunity
You have 10 minutes to complete
You have 7 minutes to peer review the work of another.
Everyone is done in 18 minutes.
Quick review
timer
18:00
Slide 2 - Tekstslide
Lab-project bacterial culture:
In pairs (not 1 or 3)
One lab report handed per pair in :
Monday 31st of October for feedback
Monday 21nd of November definitively
Grade counts 2x.
Slide 3 - Tekstslide
Google classroom
NOW READ the following document on the google classroom
YR3_PROJECT_CH10
You do this silently!
Slide 4 - Tekstslide
Instructions for culturing
one bag of materials PER PERSON
one petri dish to be kept cold (fridge; 4-7 *C)
one petri dish to be kept at room temperature (around 21 *C)
divide each petri dish in two halves: A and B
write warm on one petri dish and cold on the other
when writing: WRITE ON THE BOTTOM (not on the lid)
choose two locations to swab: A and B
collect the swabs and use the q-tips to infect the dishes
collect pictures and data for at least two weeks
Slide 5 - Tekstslide
When swabbing...
keep the dishes closed as long as you can.
move the q-tip over the object that you want to sample
open the lid and gently WITHOUT PRESSURE stroke the q-tip over the agar surface (otherwise the agar will tear)
remember: A and B are separate locations!
quickly close the lid
when swabbing the agar, keep the plate up-side-down
TIPS
- Don't wait too long with swabbing: the quality of the agar deteriorates
- NEVER open the lid when bacterial cultures have appeared.

About scientific research
Research question
- indicates a link between two factors (
- independent and dependent variable
- is specific and manageable
Hypothesis
- predicted outcome
- includes link from research question
- is ALWAYS explained
- if.... then.... because
Slide 7 - Tekstslide
The independent variable
More than one group
- experimental group
- more experimental groups are optional
- control group
One difference: the independent variable
- The variable factor is manipulated by the researchers
- belongs on the x-axis of graphs
Slide 8 - Tekstslide
Look at the image:
What is the main purpose for including a control group in your experiment?
A
because that increases the group size
B
because the experiment can be controlled better
C
because the data of the experimental group needs to be compared to a normal setting
D
because the data of the control group will influence the data from the experimental group
Slide 9 - Quizvraag
What is the variable in your lab project that is manipulated by you?
A
temperature
B
locations
Slide 10 - Quizvraag
What now?
form pairs
fill out the form on the classroom to let me know who your lab partner is
find a seat next to each other and re-read the following parts 1, 2 and 3 of the project introduction (YR3_PROJECT_CH10)
You also find the YR3_PROJECT_CH10 document in the 'labreport: hand in your first draft here'-assignment. Divide roles in this document in part 2 of the document.
Write down your research question and hypothesis in part 3 of the document.
Discuss and determine your locations (A and B)
Start writing Chapters 1 and 2 of the lab report in the 'first draft project CH10' document
Are there any remaining questions?
Slide 11 - Tekstslide
What is to come?
17th October: lesson 7 (immunization and blood groups)
24th October: Autumn break
31st October: HAND IN first draft lab report & lesson 8 (diseases, substance abuse)
